Maybe one day the outspoken CB will get there.

If there's one thing New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner isn't lacking, it's confidence. The fourth overall pick of the 2022 draft burst onto the scene with a rookie year that included a Pro Bowl selection, a first-team All-Pro nod, and a Defensive Rookie of the Year Trophy.

From that point forward, he seemed ordained to become one of the game's biggest stars. 2023 was more of the same, and while there were some hiccups in 2024, the Jets avoided a catastrophe fans know all too well and locked up their young star for life with a record-breaking contract extension.

With so many accolades and a new contract in hand, it seemed like the next logical step for Gardner was to ascend to a captaincy, especially with the departure of long-time defensive leader linebacker C.J. Mosley.

Not so fast, however. When the Jets announced their captains for the 2025 season at the end of August, Gardner's name was conspicuously absent.

The Jets selected six captains in total, three on the offensive side of the ball, two on the defense, and one special teamer. Representing the offense are quarterback Justin Fields, Gardner's draft classmate Garrett Wilson, and Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Representing the defense are superstar defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and former fifth-round pick turned star linebacker Jamien Sherwood. Reserve linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball rounds out the proceedings as the leader of the special teams unit.

It's hard to argue with those selections on the defensive side of the ball. Williams was a captain in 2024 and has developed into one of the top five defensive tackles in the league.

Sherwood's emergence, the former college safety finished third in the NFL with 158 tackles last season, is a big reason why the Jets were comfortable moving on from Mosley, making him a well-deserved choice as well.

Despite this, given Gardner's outspoken nature, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him pout. However, the 25-year-old took the snub in stride, stating that he's "not tripping" about not getting it this time while vowing to earn a captaincy in the future.

For Gang Green, that is a very good thing. A motivated Gardner is a dangerous force to be reckoned with, especially after a 2024 season that saw him slip somewhat from his lofty standard.

After posting astronomical Pro Football Focus grades of 87.9 and 88.6 in 2022 and 2023, respectively, Gardner turned in a 70.2 performance, which ranked 46th out of 222 corners.

Tackling and run defense have long been the young superstar's Achilles heel, and if the snub motivates him to clean up those issues while returning to his status as a lockdown cover man, the rest of the league will be put on notice.

Making him wait for the honor might be the best decision the Jets could have made.
