Ridiculous Justin Fields stat is so embarrassing it feels impossible

This can't be real...right?

When the New York Jets signed Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract this offseason, they were under no illusion that he would be the long-term quarterback solution in Florham Park.

While Fields has shown flashes as a QB over the years, the former first-round pick has never quite been able to put it all together. He often pairs highlight-reel throws and runs with bone-headed mistakes and inconsistent accuracy, which is a large reason why he's already a member of his third NFL team.

But perhaps no statistic better represents the frustration fans feel watching Fields play quarterback than one revealed by NFL analyst Warren Sharp this week. It's safe to say that Fields typically needs more help than other quarterbacks to win games.

Fields has played in 25 games in which his opponent has scored at least 21 points — and he's lost all 25 games. He's the only winless player out of 46 quarterbacks in this sample over the last five years with at least 10 starts made.

Yes, you read that right. Justin Fields has never won a start in which his opponent scored 21 or more points. That legitimately feels impossible, but it's true.

Wild Justin Fields stat shows how much work the Jets have to do

The Jets have seen the full spectrum of Justin Fields this season. They've been witness to arguably the best and most efficient game of Fields' career, in the team's Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and likely the worst game of his NFL career just seven days later against Buffalo.

They’ve seen Fields stay in the pocket and deliver accurate intermediate throws, and they’ve seen him panic, bailing early and refusing to pull the trigger. They’ve seen him extend plays with his legs, and they’ve seen him hold the ball too long and commit costly turnovers.

That's the Justin Fields experience to a tee. That inconsistency has always been what's held him back at the NFL level. Still, it seems improbable that Fields has never won a game where his opponent scored 21+ points.

Part of the problem is that Fields hasn’t produced many wins in his career. The former Ohio State star has just 14 victories in 47 starts. In his defense, he’s led offenses that have scored 30+ points on multiple occasions, including Week 1 this season.

The issue is that those games have either featured dominant defensive performances from his team or been undermined by poor defensive showings — there’s rarely been a middle ground.

But no matter how you slice it, the numbers don’t lie. Fields’ career as a passer still leaves plenty of questions, and this egregious stat only highlights just how steep the uphill climb remains for the fifth-year signal-caller.
