The New York Jets are currently trying to see if any of the undrafted free agents from their 2025 class have the ability to make the final roster. While running back Donovan Edwards has been cited for some exemplary performances in the past, the Jets may have someone entirely new making waves after a strong start to life in Tanner Engstrand's offense.
Rich Cimini of ESPN is reporting that undrafted free agent wide receiver Jamaal Pritchett has been impressing in OTAs, with special teams coach Chris Banjo adding that he has done a "phenomenal job" in the early stages of the Jets' offseason program. Pritchett might be worth keeping an eye on.
Per Cimini, Pritchett's ability to serve as a punt returner (he had one punt return touchdown last season) and his 4.42 speed can help him emerge as a viable pro wideout. Xavier Gipson is currently competing for WR4 and the punt return job, but Gipson might need to look over his shoulder if Pritchett continues to prove himself.
Jets UDFA wide receiver Jamaal Pritchett impressing at OTAs
Pritchett is a very rare case, as he was a Senior Bowl standout who did not receive an invite to the NFL Combine. Still, the Jets were enticed enough by his speed and smarts, which could set him apart from the usual influx of undrafted hopefuls the Jets brought in this season.
Gipson is clearly his biggest competition for a roster spot. Both of them are shifty players with some solid return ability, which means that receiving upside could be the factor that decides this competition. Pritchett is fresh off totalling over 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns in his final two seasons with the Jaguars.
Assuming that Allen Lazard does not become a cap casualty, the depth chart behind Garrett Wilson likely consists of Lazard and Josh Reynolds in prominent roles, with Gipson, Tyler Johnson, and Malachi Corley fighting for the next spots.
None of those three strikes any fear into opposing defenses, meaning that any UDFA who impresses could crack this wide receiver rotation.
Pritchett will need to pull off an incredible athletic feat to even make the NFL at 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds, but if he keeps impressing Glenn and wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson enough, this team will have no choice but to keep him around for the long haul.
