24 seconds. That's all NY Jets quarterback Zach Wilson needed to drive his team down the field with no timeouts to force overtime and eventually a Jets win.
Wilson and the Jets pulled off a miraculous 13-10 win over the New York Giants in Week 8 in a game that neither team had any business winning. It was the ugliest, stupidest game of football you might ever see, but somehow, someway, the Jets emerged as the winners.
It wasn't a particularly stellar game for Wilson despite his somewhat favorable stat line, but with the game on the line and his team needing a miracle, the Jets' quarterback came through.
With 24 seconds remaining and no timeouts, Wilson fired a strike to Garrett Wilson from his own 25-yard-line for a gain of 29 yards. The very next play, Wilson scrambled to his right and found an open Allen Lazard for another 29-yard pickup.
The Jets managed to spike the ball with one second left on the game clock, Greg Zuerlein connected on a 35-yard field goal, and the Jets somehow escaped with a victory against all the odds.
Wilson spoke about his team's late-game heroics after the game, and he offered up a quote to end all quotes. "24 seconds? No problem," Wilson said as he exuded confidence.
Zach Wilson isn't lacking for confidence after miracle NY Jets win
Wilson finished the game completing 17-of-36 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown. While his final box-score numbers look promising, Wilson wasn't especially effective on Sunday.
In his defense, the Jets' offense was a mess around him. An injury-riddled offensive line struggled throughout the game. The Jets didn't have a single wide receiver outside of Garrett Wilson, who consistently created separation. The offensive coaching staff wasn't much better, either.
Still, Wilson fumbled twice and clearly wasn't seeing the field well for most of the game. In the end, however, that's not what's going to be remembered.
Fans will remember Wilson's late-game heroics that helped lead his team to the most improbable of improbable victories. They will remember his postgame confidence and boastful display of self-assurance.
They will remember the result of this game: a Jets win. Zach Wilson was a large reason that result came to fruition.
