In the latest episode of The Jet Press Podcast, Justin Fried and Mike Luciano break down the NY Jets' 53-man roster, provide analysis for reported practice squad signings, and discuss former Jets who joined new teams this week.
Justin and Mike spent the majority of the show going through the Jets' 53-man roster and breaking it down position by position. We discussed some of the more notable surprises with the roster and analyzed every practice squad addition at the time of recording.
Did the Jets make the right decisions with their wide receiver room? The team let UFL standout Brandon Smith go, but you could argue he outplayed both Irv Charles and Jason Brownlee, who was later waived on Wednesday.
The Jets also claimed undrafted rookie tight end Brenden Bates off waivers from the Chicago Bears. Bates is a prototypical blocking tight end who shined this preseason in Chicago. He also offers intriguing receiving upside, which Justin and Mike discussed during the show.
The Jets decided to carry 10 offensive linemen, with the likes of Max Mitchell and Xavier Newman both making the 53-man roster. Players like Jake Hanson and Kohl Levao were signed to the practice squad.
Of course, the hottest topic of roster cuts for the Jets was the team's decision to keep three undrafted rookie defensive linemen as well as Takk McKinley on the active roster. Did the Jets make the right decision here? In short: yes, they absolutely did.
There weren't many other surprises in the linebacker or defensive back rooms, but the Jets did make a notable addition to their practice squad, signing former Minnesota Vikings first-round pick Lewis Cine.
Finally, Justin and Mike discussed a host of former Jets who were in the news this week. The likes of Mike White, Dalvin Cook, and even Tim Boyle found new homes while Michael Carter was cut by the Arizona Cardinals.
*Update: Lewis Cine has reportedly changed his mind and is signing with the Buffalo Bills practice squad*
