The NY Jets have reported to training camp with a relatively healthy roster. In fact, only three players on the team remain on injured lists entering the summer. One of those players is rookie quarterback Jordan Travis.

The Jets knew that Travis's road to recovery would be a long one after the former Florida State star suffered a gruesome leg injury in November of last year. It was always assumed that Travis wouldn't be ready for the start of training camp in July.

Unfortunately, Jets fans might need to wait longer than anticipated to see Travis eventually take the field. Jets head coach Robert Saleh provided an unfortunate update on Travis's rehab on Thursday when he told reporters that it was "going to take a little longer than we were hoping."

There was a point in the spring when the Jets hoped Travis could be ready as early as the start of training camp. Now, it doesn't look like he's going to be activated from the non-football injury list anytime soon.

The NY Jets signed a new quarterback because of the Jordan Travis injury

This notion is supported by the fact that the Jets signed a new quarterback, Ben Bryant, to their roster on Thursday after placing Haason Reddick on the reserve/did not report list.

Bryant spent three years as a starter in college, starting games for Cincinnati, Eastern Michigan, and finally Northwestern in 2023. At 6-foot-3, 218 pounds, Bryant is a well-built pocket passer with an NFL arm, but he's a below-average athlete and is likely little more than a camp arm.

The Jets needed another quarterback to join the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Tyrod Taylor, and undrafted rookie Andrew Peasley, with Travis still out rehabbing. Expect to see plenty of Peasley and Bryant in the preseason.

Given the language Saleh used when speaking to reporters, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Travis begin the year on an injured list before being activated midseason. The Jets will likely wait until after roster cuts to transfer him to the reserve/NFI list, which would keep him out a minimum of six games.

Of course, the Jets don't expect Travis to appear in a regular-season game in 2024. The hope is that Travis's rookie season can be a redshirt year for the former Heisman candidate. It's never ideal to miss live practice reps, though.

The Jets will take things slow with their rookie quarterback over the next few weeks/months as he continues his extensive rehab. It's just taking a little longer than the team initially expected.
