NY Jets' Sauce Gardner and Jermaine Johnson have decent odds to win DROY
By Kristen Wong
The NY Jets have not one, but two players in the running for Defensive Rookie of the Year in Sauce Gardner and Jermaine Johnson -- just another reason why the Jets won the 2022 draft.
According to WynnBET, Jermaine Johnson has +850 odds to win DROY while Sauce Gardner has +900 odds to win the award.
The favorites for DROY are Detroit Lions' Aidan Hutchinson and New York Giants' Kayvon Thibodeaux at +450 odds followed by Jacksonville Jaguars' Travon Walker and Devin Lloyd, Baltimore Ravens' Kyle Hamilton, and Green Bay Packers' Quay Walker.
Johnson and Gardner's odds seem fairly well placed considering the strength of this year's rookie defensive class, and even if they don't win widespread league acclaim, they will certainly make an immediate impact in the Jets' squad.
Jermaine Johnson and Sauce Gardner ranked in top-10 for best odds to win DROY in 2022
Sauce Gardner, the Jets' first pick of the draft, boasts a wide array of skills from man coverage to pass coverage to overall tackling ability and could fit in well in New York's defensive scheme.
The Jets' pass defense ranked at the bottom of the league in 2021, so Gardner had better deliver the "sauce" and carve out a significant role for himself in the backfield.
New York traded up into the first round to take pass-rusher Jermaine Johnson at No. 26 overall, and at the time Johnson was one of the most polarizing rookies entering the draft.
Despite the controversy surrounding him, the Florida State edge-rusher led the ACC in sacks (11.0) and tackles for loss (17.5) and won ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Time will tell if Johnson (and Gardner) can translate their college success into NFL glory, but the two rookies have both a high ceiling and high expectations heading into the 2022 season.
