A new star WR trade target has emerged for the NY Jets
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets are expected to explore every possible option to address the wide receiver position this offseason. From Davante Adams to Mike Evans to Tee Higgins to Calvin Ridley, the Jets will leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of receiver help.
A new name has emerged among the possibly available options this offseason following the Super Bowl. San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's future in the Bay Area has come into question following a series of cryptic social media posts and quotes.
Aiyuk's girlfriend and best friend took to social media following the Super Bowl to express doubt that the star wideout would play another game for the 49ers. His girlfriend straight-up said Aiyuk "might not be [at Levi's Stadium] next season."
The 49ers exercised Aiyuk's fifth-year option last season, and he's set to enter the final year of his rookie contract in 2024. Aiyuk wants an extension, however. And more importantly, he wants to win.
Could the NY Jets target Brandon Aiyuk amidst trade rumors?
Aiyuk spoke to reporters on Tuesday, and when asked if he wants to remain in San Francisco moving forward, the former first-round pick responded with a cryptic, "If that's the right move, yeah."
When asked about what that "right move" might look like, Aiyuk insisted it included "being a champion." Aiyuk wants to get paid, but he also wants to win a championship. Perhaps he's soured on the 49ers after his team fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
The Jets likely don't offer the same level of Super Bowl contention that the 49ers do (few teams can claim that), but the hope is that this team can compete for a championship in 2024. At the very least, perhaps the possibility of playing with Aaron Rodgers would be appealing,
Aiyuk is coming off the best season of his career, one in which he led his team with 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. It's the second year in a row Aiyuk has recorded 1,000+ receiving yards.
The Jets are looking for a receiver to pair with Garrett Wilson this offseason, and if Aiyuk were to be made available, he would almost certainly be one of the top options on the market.
It wouldn't be cheap to acquire Aiyuk, especially since he would likely expect a contract extension. It's possible the Jets would have to move the No. 10 overall pick to get a deal done, at least as part of a pick swap. Still, it might be worth it.
Aiyuk's situation is one to monitor as the offseason progresses. He's the latest star wide receiver to emerge as a possible target for the Jets.
