Former NY Jets RB Bilal Powell hints at a return with cryptic tweet
By Justin Fried
There might not be a more universally beloved NY Jets player in recent memory than former running back Bilal Powell. For nine seasons, Powell was the embodiment of professionalism on and off the field with the Jets.
He was Mr. Reliable. Mr. Professional. Mr. Underrated.
His time with the Jets came to an end following the 2019 season and the 33-year-old has been out of football ever since. But is it possible that Powell could be set to make a return to the franchise he called home for nearly a decade?
Powell took to Twitter on Thursday and posted a pretty cryptic tweet that got Jets fans thinking. He tweeted out, without context, "Jets fans see you soon!" Another fan asked how Powell's morning was going, to which he replied that it was "going well."
Note the use of the "Jet" emojis in the following tweets.
Could Bilal Powell be returning to the NY Jets?
This, of course, prompted a significant response from Jets fans, many of whom were pleading for their team's former running back to return home. Now, this is obviously all speculation at this point.
It's unclear whether or not Powell is actually returning to the organization or even what role it would be in. At 33-years-old and having not played since 2019, it's hard to believe the Jets would bring him back as an active player.
The Jets also already have a running backs coach in Taylor Embree so it likely wouldn't be in that position either. But there are still plenty of ways Powell could contribute.
The Jets added former running back and return specialist Leon Washington to the coaching staff last year and he spent the 2021 season as a special teams assistant. Perhaps Powell could join the staff as an additional offensive assistant.
In nine years with the Jets, Powell rushed for 3,675 yards and 15 touchdowns. He ranks eighth all-time in franchise rushing yards and is one of the longest-tenured members of the organization in recent history.
Jets fans would welcome Bilal Powell back with open arms. Here's to hoping it actually happens.
