NY Jets assistant coach leaving to join Mike LaFleur and the Rams (REPORT)
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets have quietly been making some notable changes to their offensive coaching staff this offseason, and one more significant name is reportedly set to leave to reunite with former offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur in Los Angeles.
Jake Ellenbogen of Downtown Rams is reporting that Jets quarterbacks coach Rob Calabrese is expected to leave the Jets to join the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff. The specifics of Calabrese's new role are unknown, but the Rams do not currently have a pass game coordinator under contract.
Calabrese has spent the last three years as the Jets' quarterbacks coach, joining Robert Saleh's staff in 2021 after two years spent as an offensive quality control coach for the Denver Broncos.
The Jets have already parted ways with running backs coach Taylor Embree and wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni, replacing them with veteran coaches Tony Dews and Shawn Jefferson, respectively. It sounds like a third notable change is on the way.
The NY Jets continue to make changes to their offensive staff
Calabrese and LaFleur, who is currently the offensive coordinator of the Rams, worked together in New York for two years before the latter left to join his new team. It seems as though the former Jets coach reached out to poach one of his former staff-mates.
Calabrese hasn't garnered the best reputation during his time with the Jets. The Long Island native was entrusted with overseeing the development of Zach Wilson despite his overall lack of experience. The results speak for themselves.
The Jets hired former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing last offseason to work closely with the quarterbacks and essentially serve as Nathaniel Hackett's right-hand man. The addition of Downing made Calabrese's job a little redundant.
It's unclear who the Jets would consider bringing in to replace Calabrese, but there have been rumblings that the team is looking to hire a veteran coach to assist with offensive play calling. Perhaps that coach would fill Calabrese's role.
Either way, it seems like the Jets will be making another sizable change to their offensive coaching staff. This one doesn't feel like a significant loss.
