NY Jets news: Jets lose multiple assistant coaches, Joe Tippmann honors

The NY Jets promised not to make any wholesale changes to their coaching staff this offseason, but there has been a little tweaking to this point. Some of those changes have been voluntary, while others haven't been the Jets' decision.

The team has already lost two assistant coaches this offseason. Defensive assistant Ricky Manning Jr. joined the Las Vegas Raiders staff as the team's new cornerbacks coach and special teams assistant Michael Ghobrial was named the New York Giants' new special teams coordinator.

Manning started with the Jets in 2021, working alongside Tony Oden to help develop one of the best secondaries in the NFL. Ghobrial worked under Brant Boyer, joining the staff in 2021 after spending 12 seasons coaching at the collegiate level.

While the Jets' offensive coaching staff is among the worst in football, the team's defensive and special-teams staffs are well respected. This is further evidence of that.

Joe Tippmann named to All-Rookie team

The Jets never planned for Joe Tippmann to start in his rookie season, but following a slew of offensive line injuries early in the year, the rookie second-round pick was thrust into the starting lineup almost immediately.

Tippmann would go on to start 14 games for the Jets this past season, and while he had his ups and downs, the Wisconsin product did more than enough to solidify himself as a future building block along the offensive line.

He was rewarded for his efforts last week as he was officially named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Tippmann was the only Jets player named to the team and the only center to receive the honor.

Tippmann is one of the few building blocks on a questionable Jets offensive line entering the 2024 offseason. He's expected to be an important part of the team's future moving forward.

Jets hire a new RBs coach

The Jets have reportedly hired former Tennessee Titans assistant Tony Dews to be their new running backs coach, per CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.

Dews spent last season as the Titans' tight ends coach but was previously the team's running backs coach from 2018-2022. All-Pro running back Derrick Henry set multiple franchise records and developed into the best running back in football under Dews' watch in Tennessee.

Dews is the third former Titans offensive assistant to join the Jets' coaching staff over the last two years, following passing game coordinator Todd Downing and offensive line coach Keith Carter. The Jets might not be done adding former Titans coaches, either.

The Jets parted ways with former running backs coach Taylor Embree last week. The hope is that Dews, who has a stronger track record of success, will provide an upgrade to a lackluster offensive coaching staff.
