NY Jets news: Derek Carr to be released, Senior Bowl standouts
By Justin Fried
With the deadline for a trade approaching quickly, it seems highly unlikely that the Las Vegas Raiders are able to get a trade done for Derek Carr. If the Jets are going to land him, it's going to have to be in free agency.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported on Friday that there was approximately a 1% percent chance that Carr is traded at this point, and the only way to even reach that 1% would be if Darren Waller or Hunter Renfrow was included.
Over $40 million of Carr's contract becomes guaranteed on Feb. 15, so the Raiders have until that date to either trade or release him. It seems as though the latter is what's going to happen.
Carr has still not been granted permission to speak to other teams, per Garafolo. That said, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Raiders have given Carr permission to speak to other teams once compensation has been agreed to. That seemingly has not happened yet — and it might not happen at all.

Senior Bowl standouts
The Senior Bowl is set to take place today at 2:30 pm ET, but the real action happened this week during practices. A number of draft prospects improved their stock going into the weekend.
The likes of Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz, Stanford wide receiver Michael Wilson, Kansas State cornerback Julius Brents, and others all stood out amongst the rest.
Schmitz is widely seen as the best center prospect in this year's class and could be a target for the Jets come April. We listed Schmitz among 14 prospects that Jets fans should keep an eye on during today's Senior Bowl.

Mekhi Becton recruiting Aaron Rodgers
Jets offensive tackle Mekhi Becton is making sure to do his fair share of social media recruiting. The former first-round pick posted an edited image of the movie "Step Brothers" to Twitter on Friday with the faces of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly replaced by Becton and Aaron Rodgers.
The caption read "Can’t wait for the sequel of step brothers!"
Becton later responded to another edited image showing Becton and Rodgers standing alongside one another. The social media teasing seems to suggest that Becton would absolutely support a Rodgers trade.
From Becton to Sauce Gardner, Jets players are rallying around the quarterback recruitment game this offseason.
