NY Jets QB Mike White 'could garner trade interest' with strong summer
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets fan base fell in love with the legend that is Mike White last season. White was forced into action following Zach Wilson's injury, and what followed became the stuff of urban legend.
Despite having never appeared in an NFL game prior, White stepped into the starting lineup and led the Jets to a shocking win over the eventual AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals on the heels of a record-setting 400-yard performance.
The game was considered so historic that the NFL later dedicated an exhibit in the Pro Football Hall of Fame to the former Dallas Cowboys fifth-round pick.
Of course, White would eventually settle back into a backup role once Wilson returned, but many Jets fans will never forget those glorious few weeks of Mike White Mania. Entering the 2022 season, White is fighting for the backup job.
But perhaps he may also be fighting for his football future elsewhere.
Could the NY Jets trade Mike White this summer?
The Athletic's Connor Hughes recently suggested that White "could garner trade interest" if he puts together an "impressive" summer. Given that White is currently listed third on the Jets QB depth chart, it's certainly an idea that makes some sense.
White proved last year that he can play in this league, and while he certainly hasn't proven that he could be a long-term starter just yet, some team may be willing to take a chance on him as an investment.
Whether that team sees White as a backup or someone who could push for a starting role, it's likely he'd at least dress on game days. Right now, he figures to be a healthy scratch each week with Zach Wilson and Joe Flacco ahead of him on the depth chart.
Of course, White's trade value could depend on how he performs this summer. If he looks good in the preseason and flashes in training camp, the Jets may just be able to get something of decent value for him.
The Jets are very happy with their quarterback depth at the moment, but general manager Joe Douglas has never shied away from trading away depth pieces for assets. White could be his latest project.
The legend of Mike White will live on in Jets circles long after he's left the organization, and perhaps his departure could come sooner than many expect.
