NY Jets could try to sneak Mike White onto the practice squad
By Justin Fried
The NFL world was taken by storm when NY Jets backup quarterback Mike White emerged from obscurity with his historic, 400-yard outing against the Cincinnati Bengals last season.
Mike White mania was the talk of the football world for a couple of weeks, and although White never quite reached those same heights again, he cemented his place in NFL lore.
Heading into the 2022 season, White is currently penciled in as the third quarterback on the depth chart behind Zach Wilson and veteran Joe Flacco. Most assume he's a lock for the 53-man roster, but there's a chance the Jets could have other plans in mind.
SNY's Connor Hughes insisted that there's a chance the Jets could try to sneak White onto the practice squad to save a roster spot, perhaps for an extra defensive lineman.
The Jets could have some difficult roster decisions to make this summer. Every roster spot matters. Could that result in the Jets trying to sneak White onto their practice squad?
Mike White might not make the NY Jets roster
White's role on the Jets is pretty much set in stone at this point. He isn't going to be pushing Flacco for the backup job, especially given that the veteran QB has had a strong camp to this point.
Instead, his role is simple. He's the third quarterback on the depth chart who won't be active on gamedays, barring an injury to either Wilson or Flacco. With that in mind, it could make sense for the Jets to leave him off the active roster.
Of course, the biggest concern would be the possibility that another team could poach White from the Jets. Teams are allowed to protect four players on the practice squad per week, and there is no limit on the number of times a player could be protected.
In theory, the Jets could stash White on the practice squad and simply protect him every week. That would be one way to avoid having a player who's inactive every week taking up a spot on the 53-man roster.
Mike White may be a notable player who could garner interest from other teams, but that might not prevent him from hearing his name called on final cut day.
