NY Jets: Jamien Sherwood out for the year with torn Achilles
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets didn't only lose Zach Wilson to injury on Sunday. Fellow rookie, linebacker Jamien Sherwood, also exited the game early with an injury.
Only his appears to be a lot more significant.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday that Sherwood suffered a torn Achilles in the team's 54-13 loss to the New England Patriots and will miss the remainder of the season.
An Achilles injury is one of the worst injuries an athlete can suffer, and depending on the intensity of the rehab process, it could force Sherwood to miss some if not all of the 2022 season as well.
Jamien Sherwood's injury is another big loss for the NY Jets defense
A fifth-round pick in this year's draft, Sherwood was a standout college safety at Auburn. The Jets drafted Sherwood to play linebacker and almost immediately thrust him into a prominent role.
As a result of various injuries, Sherwood had been playing a featured role on defense early in his NFL career starting four of five games played this season.
The 21-year-old recorded 14 total tackles in five games and was coming off his most extensive usage of the season as he played 68 percent of defensive snaps on Sunday, starting in place of the injured C.J. Mosley.
Sherwood's loss is another blow to a Jets defense that is hurting for depth at the linebacker position.
Free-agent signing Jarrad Davis is yet to play in a game this season and is still in the process of working his way back from the injured reserve. Mosley missed this week's game with a hamstring injury and his status for Week 8 is uncertain.
Even fellow rookie linebacker Hamsah Nasirildeen is currently on the IR with a knee injury and hasn't played since Week 4.
With Sherwood out, the Jets will turn to the likes of Quincy Williams, Del'Shawn Phillips, Blake Cashman, and Noah Dawkins unless Mosley and/or Davis could return for the team's next game.
Just a brutal, devastating injury for a player the Jets have been very high on. Here's to hoping Sherwood makes a full recovery and could return in time for the start of the 2022 season.
