NY Jets draft LT of the future and Aaron Rodgers' new best friend in Olu Fashanu
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets went into the 2024 NFL Draft with one goal in mind: get help for Aaron Rodgers. That help will come in the form of Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu.
Most expected the Jets to prioritize adding a pass catcher in the first round, but with Rome Odunze off the board, the team opted to pass on Georgia tight end Brock Bowers and add some much-needed offensive line depth.
Fashanu would be an immediate starting left tackle on most teams, but that won't necessarily be his role on the Jets. He's the left tackle of the future, but he'll be asked to sit and learn behind a future Hall of Famer in Tyron Smith.
The Jets added Smith, John Simpson, and Morgan Moses to revamp their offensive line in the offseason. Fashanu gives the Jets an insurance policy and a long-term solution at a premium position.
Aaron Rodgers will be happy the NY Jets drafted Olu Fashanu
While Rodgers would've loved to see the Jets land a new pass catcher for him, he certainly won't be upset about the team doing everything they can to keep him upright. Fashanu helps accomplish just that.
A former three-star recruit, Fashanu earned the starting left tackle job in his third year at Penn State, starting eight games en route to being named a second-team All-American. He put himself firmly on the NFL's radar ahead of the 2023 season.
Fashanu followed up his impressive 2022 season with a Consensus All-American selection in 2023. The 21-year-old was named the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year, finishing his college career with zero sacks allowed on 733 pass-blocking snaps.
Fashanu is one of the most technically sound pass blockers in this class, and his athleticism and length give him All-Pro potential at the next level. He'll have the opportunity to learn behind one of the greatest to ever do it too.
Smith hasn't played more than 13 games in a season in nearly a decade, Moses is coming off offseason shoulder surgery, and Alijah Vera-Tucker has missed significant time in each of the last two seasons.
The Jets needed to acquire offensive line depth and they did, securing their left tackle of the future in the process. Fashanu should make Aaron Rodgers very happy.
