NY Jets believe Derek Carr can 'lead them to a championship'
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets hosted free-agent quarterback Derek Carr on an official visit this weekend, the second such visit Carr has taken this offseason. That meeting concluded this past weekend, and all reports indicate it went very well.
ESPN's Jeff Darlington spoke about the latest with Carr and the Jets on Monday, and he revealed that the meeting between the two was "very positive." The Jets reportedly believe that Carr is a "great player," and remain very interested in signing him.
The issue, as Darlington notes, is timing. The Jets are still awaiting a decision from Aaron Rodgers as the future Hall of Famer finishes his darkness retreat. There's no current timeline for his decision, although he implied it could come soon after his retreat.
As for Carr, it's likely that he takes his time as well. Carr could have another visit on tap, perhaps this time with the Carolina Panthers. He's made it clear that he plans to sign before the start of free agency, though.
There is a mutual interest between Derek Carr and the NY Jets
So what can we interpret from this report? The Jets like Carr and they believe they can contend for a Super Bowl with him at quarterback. Perhaps we can even assume that their interest in him has gone up over the last week or so.
The Jets still want Rodgers — he remains their top target. But general manager Joe Douglas is also well aware that they can't afford to wait on Rodgers and risk missing out on both of their preferred quarterback options.
They're playing a bit of a dangerous game here, and they know it.
Meanwhile, Carr is clearly intrigued by the Jets as a potential landing spot. The Jets see Carr as someone who can help them win a championship — don't think that report goes unnoticed by the longtime Raiders quarterback.
There appears to be a mutual interest between Carr and the Jets. A productive, healthy visit can only be good news for a Jets team still in search of their new starting QB.
We should have some clarity on the Jets' quarterback situation within the coming days, but until Rodgers makes his decision, everything is pretty much on hold. Despite their positive meeting, that includes any Carr conversations.
