1. NY Jets target: Austin Reiter, C, New Orleans Saints

It's incredibly surprising that, up until Wednesday, Austin Reiter remained a free agent. This is one of those situations that just doesn't make much sense.

A former seventh-round pick, Reiter had been the Kansas City Chiefs' starting center for the past two seasons and he finished the 2020 season with a Pro Football Focus grade of 69.2 that ranked 12th at his position.

By all accounts, Reiter seemed to be one of the better interior offensive linemen on the market. But as the months went on, Reiter remained unsigned.

Reiter was finally scooped up by a team on Wednesday when the New Orleans Saints added him to their practice squad following an injury to center Erik McCoy. Yes, the practice squad.

Now, the Saints do plan to elevate Reiter to the active roster ahead of Week 2. But as of now, it appears that will be a temporary elevation.

If the Saints don't place protection on Reiter and allow the other 31 NFL teams to poach him, the Jets should absolutely pounce. After all, he would be a significant upgrade over Dan Feeney as the team's backup interior offensive lineman.

Will they? Considering they had months to sign him and they didn't, probably not. But in a perfect world, this is a move the Jets would make.
