NY Jets: 5 pass rushers to trade for including Chandler Jones
By Justin Fried
2. NY Jets trade target: Chase Winovich (New England Patriots)
Chase Winovich led the New England Patriots with 5.5 sacks last season. One year later, he surprisingly finds himself fighting for a roster spot.
Winovich has played well through the first two seasons of his career. The 2019 third-round pick has 10.5 sacks and 22 QB hits through two campaigns and has made significant strides as a pass rusher.
But the Patriots made it a point of emphasis to improve their pass rush this offseason signing Matthew Judon in free agency and bringing back Kyle Van Noy. They also return Dont'a Hightower who opted out of last season.
On top of that, New England has 2020 second-round pick Josh Uche who has looked excellent, and 2021 third-round pick Ronnie Perkins. Winovich, who began training camp on the PUP list, looks like the surprising odd-man-out.
Inter-division trades are rare. They're even rarer when they're between bitter rivals like the Jets and Patriots. But that forbidden door has been torn down in the past — case in point, the Demaryius Thomas deal and multiple draft-day trades.
If the Jets are looking for a young, talented pass rusher still on his rookie contract, they aren't going to do any better than Winovich.
If the Patriots are open for business, the Jets should give them a call about the former Michigan standout.
