NY Jets: 4 pleasant surprises from training camp so far
By Justin Fried

3. Austin Walter, RB, NY Jets
Another position that features a number of players vying for playing time is running back. The Jets went into the summer with the likes of Tevin Coleman, Michael Carter, Ty Johnson, and La'Mical Perine seemingly competing for snaps.
But a new name has emerged from relative obscurity. That player is Austin Walter.
Claimed off waivers back in May, Walter spent last season with the San Francisco 49ers so he has some level of familiarity with the Jets coaching staff.
That said, Walter wasn't seen as anything more than a bottom-of-the-roster player heading into training camp. With just one career carry, his only path to the roster seemed to be on special teams where he has experience as a kick returner.
But the speedy Walter has made it clear that he wants a role on offense.
The former Rice standout has been making waves this summer and rattled off what was likely the best run of training camp on Thursday. Walter broke a 70-yard run in which he made multiple defenders miss much to the delight of the offensive coaching staff.
In fact, Walter was working only behind Coleman and Carter on Thursday indicating that the coaching staff is very high on him.
It's too early to say if Walter will make the final roster, but he's clearly a player to keep an eye on. He isn't just a camp body.
