3. NY Jets free agent target: Richard Sherman (CB)

From one former 49ers defender to another. It's honestly surprising that Richard Sherman remains a free agent two weeks into the month of July.

Sherman will play in 2021 — he's simply biding his time and waiting for the right offer. Perhaps that offer could come from the Jets.

The Jets are desperate for cornerback help and, if they are to make a free-agent addition at some point, it seems likely that this is the position they address.

Gang Green has taken a "dart-throwing" approach hoping that one or two of their many youngsters establish themselves as legitimate starting options. But they could use a sure thing in their cornerback room.

Sherman is just that.

Even at age 33, the five-time Pro Bowler is still going strong. After all, he's just two years removed from being arguably the best cornerback in the NFL.

Expecting that type of production in 2021, especially with him coming off an injury-plagued 2020, would be foolish. But Sherman would give the Jets a veteran presence in the cornerback room and easily be the team's best player at the position.

Sherman wants to play for a contender, but if the Jets can sell him on a Robert Saleh reunion, there's a chance he lands in Florham Park after all.
