NY Jets Day 2 Preview

The New York Jets are not done. With plenty of cap space and only offensive free agency signings/agreements — much like the 2021 NFL Draft — expect some defensive players to join the green and white. After all, Saleh is a defensive-minded head coach.

That being said, it probably makes Saleh absolutely sick to his stomach to watch opposing tight ends absolutely tear up his secondary. For some reference, Zach Wilson threw nine touchdowns during his 13-game rookie season.

Meanwhile, the Jets gave up eight touchdowns to just the tight end position in 2021. Needless to say, the Jets are desperate for defensive backs.

The good news is the Jets have two draft picks within the top 10 and there are two stud defensive backs (Sauce Gardner and Kyle Hamilton).

The great news? Day 2 of faux free agency contains notable safeties such as Marcus Williams, Tyrann Mathieu, and Jordan Whitehead, in addition to cornerbacks such as Stephon Gilmore and Steven Nelson.

My NY Jets Prediction

  • Sign Gilmore as he has experience in the AFC East division where Joe Douglas is 0-12 during his tenure and can play the veteran corner in a zone scheme, ala Richard Sherman in San Francisco.
  • Marcus Williams will cost too much (hopefully he goes to a team drafting in the top 10 which allows Kyle Hamilton to fall) while Mathieu goes to New Orleans.
  • Sign Jordan Whitehead to play strong safety
  • Sign Will Fuller, Matt Breida, and Hayden Hurst to short-term cap-friendly deals.
