NY Jets set to hold 2021 rookie minicamp this weekend
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets will be one of the first teams to reconvene this offseason as the plan is for the team to hold their rookie minicamp this weekend, starting tomorrow, May 7th.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Thursday that the Jets, Indianapolis Colts, and Las Vegas Raiders will all be holding their rookie minicamps this weekend while the remaining 29 NFL franchises will hold theirs next weekend.
On top of the rookie minicamp schedule, each team's entire offseason workout schedule was released on Thursday as well.
The Jets will hold their OTA workouts on May 24, May 26-27, June 1, June 3-4, June 7-8, and June 10-11 while their mandatory minicamp will be from June 15-17.
What to expect from the NY Jets' rookie minicamp?
All offseason workouts were held virtually last year, including rookie minicamp, as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As such, teams weren't able to see their players practice in person until much later in the summer.
It was a significant blow to all players, but perhaps none more so than the rookies. There's a reason why rookie minicamp is not only the first event of the offseason workouts, but that it's even an event in the first place.
This is a crucial time for rookies to get acclimated with their new teams via film sessions, walkthroughs, and on-field drills. It's the first time coaches will get to see their rookies perform in front of them since the draft.
You lose a significant amount of that importance conducting these meetings virtually. For that reason, teams and rookies alike will surely be happy to return to some sense of normalcy this offseason.
The early stages of rookie minicamp usually consist of film sessions where players begin to learn their new system in somewhat of a classroom setting. From there, coaches can put players through on-field drills and walkthroughs to see if they're acclimating well to the NFL.
Both from a physical and mental perspective.
All 10 2021 NFL Draft picks are expected to be in attendance as well as the 12 players the Jets signed as undrafted free agents. Any other undrafted free agents could also be invited on a tryout basis.
It's good to have the offseason schedule returning to some degree of normalcy this year. And the Jets are wasting no time as they're eager to see their rookies take the field.
