The NY Jets were embarrassed by the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1 this past Monday night. While the final score might not reflect it, the Jets were soundly defeated by their opponents on Monday in a game that was supposed to prove that they belong in the NFL's elite tier of teams.
Instead, the Jest' defense laid an egg and the offense couldn't control time of possession, leading to a disappointing opening week loss. If that game wasn't embarrassing enough, 49ers star defensive end Nick Bosa poured salt in the wound later in the week.
When speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Bosa was asked about his team's upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings. That surprisingly prompted an unprovoked shot at his previous opponent.
Bosa insisted that the 49ers are "playing a better team" that's "playing better football" this week. The four-time Pro Bowler didn't hesitate to say the Vikings were a better football team than the Jets. That's a direct shot — one that many Jets fans might not love.
Nick Bosa believes the Vikings are a 'better team' than the NY Jets
The Jets were widely seen as one of the top contenders in a loaded AFC entering the season. The return of Aaron Rodgers has sparked renewed optimism in a Jets team that, on paper, has one of the most talented rosters in the NFL.
Unfortunately, the team's performance in Week 1 left a lot to be desired. Yes, it was a road matchup with the defending NFC champions and arguably the most talented team in football, but the Jets looked overmatched compared to their opposition.
On the contrary, the Vikings cruised their way to a 28-6 domination on the road against the New York Giants. Sam Darnold was arguably the NFL's best quarterback in Week 1, as his team overwhelmed their inferior opponents.
Of course, it's not fair to compare a matchup against arguably the NFL's worst roster to arguably the NFL's best, but there's no denying the Vikings looked significantly better than the Jets in Week 1.
The Jets have received plenty of offseason hype over the last couple of years, with many expecting Rodgers to be the one to help the team finally put an end to their 13-year playoff drought. But until the Jets get the results they're looking for, the narrative isn't going to change.
Bosa and the 49ers were able to easily dispose of a Jets team that was outplayed and outcoached in Week 1. It shouldn't be a surprise that Bosa's takeaway was that the Jets aren't actually a very good football team, at least not compared to the Vikings.
The Jets need to start winning games if they're going to earn respect around the league. Until that happens, players like Bosa will continue to disrespect them — and they won't be wrong for it.
