Haason Reddick's Jets holdout just went from dumb to dumber before Week 1
By Mike Luciano
The only player still holding out and refusing to report to his team in search of a new contract is NY Jets pass rusher Haason Reddick. Despite having never shown up to the team facility, Reddick is so adamant about getting a new contract that he is willing to miss game checks as a result of this squabble.
Reddick has refused to report to the team and requested a trade in search of a long-term deal. However, as has been shown by the fact trade talks have gone nowhere, no team in the league is willing to hand him that contract. Despite being faced with this knowledge, Reddick remains stubborn.
Reddick will forfeit a game check of close to $800,000 for missing the Jets' Week 1 duel against the San Francisco 49ers. Between all the other fines he has picked up in training camp, Reddick, who is scheduled to make around $15 million his season, has already been fined more than $5 million since his holdout began.
As Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic points out, Reddick currently doesn't cost any money against the Jets cap, and his salary will toll on a prorated basis against the cap when he returns.
Essentially, the Jets aren't going to be hurt financially by Reddick's holdout decision. The only one losing money is him.
NY Jets' Haason Reddick holding out looks even dumber after fines
In this situation, everyone is right and everyone is wrong. Reddick is extremely underpaid for how good he is, and he deserves a long-term deal, but he must realize the only way for him to get one is to report to the Jets.
Joe Douglas looks dumb not extending a player who wants a new contract when they traded for him, but the Jets are not being unreasonable in asking for a player under contract to show up to the facility.
The Jets' play on the field will be hurt without Reddick, who is now the team's best pass rusher and a top-three player on their defense. While they have more than enough depth to make up for the loss of Reddick for one week, the lack of star power could make it tough to replicate him over 17 games.
Reddick is doing the exact same thing Le'Veon Bell did years ago, and we all know how well that worked out for him. Hopefully, Reddick comes to his senses sooner rather than later.
