Former NY Jets QB Zach Wilson making late surge in Broncos QB competition
By Justin Fried
Former NY Jets quarterback Zach Wilson didn't get off to a great start with his new team, the Denver Broncos, this offseason. The former No. 2 overall pick quickly fell down the depth chart and seemed solidified as the team's QB3 behind rookie Bo Nix and veteran journeyman Jarrett Stidham.
But the tide is changing in Denver. Wilson has begun to stack positive days on training camp, and his performance in the team's preseason opener last week helped boost his stock. Now, Wilson has a chance to make things interesting.
The BYY product may not have a legitimate chance to win the starting job anymore, but he's making a late push to steal the backup role from Stidham, who has fallen behind Nix in the Broncos' QB battle.
Reports coming out of Broncos camp have been overwhelmingly positive regarding Wilson in recent days. He's building some serious momentum as we draw closer to the start of the regular season.
Zach Wilson looks 'rejuvenated' after being traded by the NY Jets
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported on Friday that Wilson has started to put together a "great camp" and that he looks "rejuvenated," according to one Broncos coach. Russini isn't the only one to report this, either.
Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright, who had previously been critical of Wilson's performance earlier in the summer, reported on Friday that the fourth-year quarterback "has really started to get comfortable in this offense over the last week or two."
Allbright insisted that Wilson has started to make "a strong case for QB2" in Denver. He may not be able to usurp Nix for the starting job, but even beating out Stidham would be a surprise to many, given his struggles a month ago.
Wilson finished 10-of-13 for 117 yards in Denver's preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts last week. He'll have another opportunity to continue gaining ground when the Broncos host the Green Bay Packers in their preseason game tonight.
The Jets sent Wilson to Denver this past offseason in a swap of late Day 3 picks, which was more than most expected the team to receive at the time of the trade. Some believed the Jets would even be forced to release their once-promising quarterback.
It would've been easy to write Wilson off after his early struggles in Denver, but the 25-year-old is proving that he might still have something to offer.
Of course, it's never wise to overreact to training camp and the preseason, but perhaps Wilson will be able to revitalize his career with the Broncos after all. The recent signs have been very encouraging.
