It’s perfectly natural for NY Jets fans to feel a bit hesitant about getting their hopes up again. The team has experienced its fair share of highs and lows, making the anticipation for a successful season both exciting and nerve-wracking.

However, there’s even more to be excited about this upcoming season compared to last year. Let’s explore standout players and the top position groups on the Jets as we approach the 2024 season.

The NFL thinks very highly of the NY Jets roster

Each season for the past five years, ESPN has surveyed NFL coaches, scouts, and executives to create a consensus top-10 list for 11 different player positions.

These aren’t just talking heads manufacturing hot takes for clicks and views. These are league insiders whose livelihoods depend on analyzing and finding talent, and so these rankings give insight into who NFL teams truly view as the best players in the NFL.

If these individual rankings are any indication of a team’s future success, then Jets fans should be excited. The Jets have nine players mentioned in 12 positions, most being honorable mentions.

The highest-ranking offensive position player on the Jets is Breece Hall, who was ranked as the No. 2 overall running back behind only San Francisco 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey. Hall is coming off a year where he was snubbed of a nomination for Comeback Player of the Year.

Hall had the fourth most all-purpose yards (1,585), most receptions by a running back (76), most receiving yards by a running back (591), and was 13th in rushing yards (994).

These numbers are truly remarkable when you remember that the year before he tore his ACL. And even though he wasn’t nominated for CPOY, he is now getting his recognition by league insiders.

The highest-ranking defensive player on the Jets is Quinnen Williams, ranked as the second-best defensive tackle behind only Kansas City Chiefs’ Chris Jones. Williams is a dominant defensive tackle, whose stats do not tell the full story. He is a game wrecker, and it is obvious that teams game plan around him.

Cornerback Sauce Gardner was ranked No. 3 overall, behind Denver Broncos' Patrick Surtain II and Cleveland Browns' Denzel Ward. That said, ESPN pointed out that Gardner's skills seem to be controversial. Some executives left him off their top 10 completely, and one called him "One of the most overrated players in the league" adding "You could call holding on him every play."

The only other top-10 offensive player listed is quarterback Aaron Rodgers at No. 8 overall. Honorable mentions are given to linebacker Quincy Williams, linebacker C.J. Mosley, wide receiver Garret Wilson, left tackle Tyron Smith, and edge rusher Haason Reddick.

Get excited Jets fans, because this team has some of the most talented players in all of football at the most important positions.

The NY Jets have a better offense and the NFL's best defense

While individual player accolades and recognition are great, it is even better when a whole unit gets recognition. And if Pro Football Focus rankings are any indication, the Jets are going to be a very good football team.

PFF ranks the Jets as not only the best defense in the AFC but the best defense in the entire NFL. By position groups, they credited the Jets with the best defensive line, linebackers, and secondary units in the league

They also rank the Jets as having the third-best OL in the AFC, and fifth-best in the NFL. This would be a massive improvement from last year’s offensive line debacle and is the most important unit for the Jets entering the 2024 season.

Keeping Aaron Rodgers healthy will help lead this team to a deep playoff run, and the key is the offensive line keeping him upright. With the acquisitions of Tyron Smith, John Simpson, Morgan Moses, and Olu Fashanu, Joe Douglas has vastly improved the depth and starting talent from just a year ago.

The offensive line will look even better if the run game keeps defenses honest, and Rodgers gets rid of the ball quickly to receivers who can create separation. With all the weapons on offense, both existing and acquired this offseason, Rodgers is going to have plenty of options.

On paper, this is the most talented Jets team entering a season since the playoff drought started following the 2010 season. The argument could even be made that this is the most talented team the Jets have ever had going into a season. But until it translates to wins, some will remain skeptical.

While last year’s hype had people talking Super Bowl, it ultimately was a failed season after the team missed the playoffs for the thirteenth straight year, tied for most in US major sports. But this year’s hype surrounding the Jets will be even louder, and rightfully so given the added talent and positional depth.

Enjoy the ride Jets fans, this year could be a special one.
