Aaron Rodgers melts down in nightmarish practice for NY Jets' offense
By Justin Fried
They say practice makes perfect. Aaron Rodgers and the NY Jets are hoping that Monday's disastrous practice can help the offense achieve perfection — or at least competence — by the time Week 1 rolls around.
As it turns out, even four-time MVPs aren't exempt from having bad days. Rodgers, who has been excellent for most of Jets training camp, put together what was likely his worst practice as a member of the Jets on Monday.
The 40-year-old QB completed just 11-of-27 passes in 11-on-11 drills, ending practice with an ugly interception to safety Tony Adams in the end zone. The lowlight was a stretch in which Rodgers went 6-for-21 after starting the day 5-of-6.
Everything went wrong for Rodgers and the Jets' offense on Monday. Miscommunications, drops, and flat-out inaccurate passes led to a nightmare day for the Jets' offense, while the defense completely dominated.
What went wrong with Aaron Rodgers and the NY Jets on Monday?
SNY's Connor Hughes reported that he "couldn’t even tell who the ball was supposed to go to" on many of Rodgers' passes in team drills. Others reported it was easily the worst the offense had looked all summer while Andy Vasquez of NJ.com reported it was the worst he had ever seen Rodgers look.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh was asked about the offense's uncharacteristically poor performance after practice, and he came to the unit's defense, insisting there was "a top-five defense on the other side."
Still, that isn't going to do much to calm the nerves of Jets fans who are begging for competent offensive play this season. Saleh also said that he hasn't decided if he plans to play the starters in the team's preseason finale against the New York Giants this Saturday.
Perhaps after Monday's performance, he should seriously consider it. The Jets' offense hasn't looked this bad all summer, but the defense has been the better unit in recent weeks. It might benefit Rodgers and the offense to get a drive or two under their belt before the regular season begins.
Rodgers joked with reporters during Saturday's preseason win over the Carolina Panthers that he already felt like Saleh had ruled him out for the Giants game. His comments could have been in jest, but the Jets have understandably been cautious with their starting QB this summer.
Of course, there's no reason to panic over one bad practice in the middle of August. Rodgers and the Jets will hope to bounce back this week ahead of the team's preseason finale on Saturday.
