The NY Jets have remained interested in re-signing veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander throughout the offseason, but as the months have gone by, the possibility of a reunion in Florham Park has seemed less and less likely.
Alexander took an official visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this month, and although no signing appears imminent, it's clear that other teams are interested.
There's every chance that Alexander, who played 49 percent of the Jets' defensive snaps in 2022, doesn't return in 2023. If that's the case, the Jets will have a pretty sizable hole to fill in their defense.
What might they do? Which players could they target to replace Alexander? Let's take a look at four potential replacements for the former Pro Bowl linebacker.
4. The NY Jets can sign Zach Cunningham
It's remarkable how quickly some off-ball linebackers have gone from being amongst the most notable players at their position to nearly out of the league in recent years. That's a trend you might notice when looking at this list.
One such individual who fits that criteria is former Houston Texans linebacker Zach Cunningham. Cunningham was the NFL's leading tackler in 2020 after signing a hefty four-year, $58 million extension that summer.
Since then, he's played for two different teams and is still looking for a new home as we approach June. Still just 28 years old, Cunningham is a strong run defender who started six games for the Tennessee Titans last season before landing on the injured reserve.
Cunningham is a liability in coverage, but he could provide value as the Jets' base package SAM linebacker in the mold of Alexander. He's someone the Jets should be keeping an eye on.
