3 NY Jets players who need to get healthy over the bye week
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets have battled through a number of crucial injuries this season to some of their top players. The likes of Breece Hall, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and seemingly every offensive tackle on the roster have spent time on the injured reserve.
The team's injury luck may not be as bad as last season, but the Jets have been forced to overcome their fair share of injuries. It's a testament to the depth that general manager Joe Douglas has accumulated that the Jets are 6-3 heading into their bye week.
That bye week couldn't come at a better time either with a few important players set to return in the very near future. The bye gives them an extra week to recover and hopefully return as soon as Week 11.
For the Jets, this logic applies to three notable players. Let's take a look at three currently injured players who could return after the bye week.
3. George Fant, OT, NY Jets
It feels like such a long time ago at this point, but just a couple of months ago, George Fant was arguably the best and most important offensive lineman on the Jets' roster.
The loss of Mekhi Becton and later Duane Brown made Fant's responsibilities at left tackle even more important, although the veteran struggled to play at the same level he did a year prior.
Part of that was due to the reality that Fant wasn't fully healthy, evidenced by the fact that the Jets placed their veteran tackle on the injured reserve shortly after their Week 3 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Fant is expected to return in the near future, and while it remains to be seen exactly how the Jets will deploy their offensive tackles, a healthy Fant would be great news for the organization. His status is very much worth monitoring over the coming week or two.
2. Max Mitchell, OT, NY Jets
Fant isn't the only offensive tackle set to return in the very near future. In fact, rookie right tackle Max Mitchell appears to be ahead of Fant in his rehab schedule and seems to have a very good chance at playing Week 11.
Mitchell was forced into the starting lineup due to injuries early in his career, starting the first four games for the team at right tackle before a knee injury landed him on the injured reserve.
The rookie fourth-round pick has made considerable progress in recent weeks and was spotted taking part in pre-game warmups ahead of each of the team's past two games.
It seems likely that Mitchell will be activated off the IR next week and could return to his place in the starting lineup, at the very least until Fant returns.
1. Corey Davis, WR, NY Jets
The Jets won't just see the return of IR'd players in Week 11 as wide receiver Corey Davis should be back in the fold following a two-game absence with a knee injury.
Davis was the Jets' leading receiver before his knee injury and had become Zach Wilson's go-to target on third down. While it was nice to see a player like Denzel Mims step up in his absence, Davis is an important part of this Jets offense and his return will be significant.
The 27-year-old wideout is well on his way to a bounce-back season with 19 catches for 351 yards in seven games. He also notably has just one drop on the season, a far cry from the five he had in nine games a year ago.
The Jets hope to get Davis back after the bye and add another weapon to their skill position group.
