The NY Jets are in complete disarray again. At 3-8 on the season, they are searching for answers that are nowhere to be found. On Tuesday morning, Woody Johnson made his second major move during the 2024 season when he fired GM Joe Douglas. This was the second firing of the season, the other coming five games in when HC Robert Saleh was also shown the door.

Once Saleh was fired and the season began to fall apart, all signs pointed towards a complete front office overhaul, and it was only a matter of time until Douglas was fired.

In the final year of a six-year contract, Douglas finished with a 30-64 record and zero playoff appearances. While Douglas had some positive moments, it was another GM tenure that featured many free-agent misses, draft busts, and, most importantly, a lot of losing.

After this failed all-in experiment with Aaron Rodgers, the NY Jets will enter the offseason staring into the abyss. Tuesday didn't get any better for the Jets when a bombshell report came out about Woody Johnson and his meddling control over the team.

While the report gives Jets and NFL fans an inside look at the true dysfunction within the organization, the main takeaway should be the need for New York to hire a head coach and general manager with previous NFL experience at both positions.

The NY Jets must hire a HC and GM with previous experience

With the bombshell report coming out, confirming what fans already knew about Woody Johnson and the upcoming rebuild, Gang Green cannot hire a first-time head coach and general manager. When looking at the Jets' failures over the last 14 seasons it has come with a lot of inexperience at prominent positions.

The Jets' last three general managers, John Idzik, Mike Maccagnan, and Joe Douglas, all never previously held a general manager position elsewhere. On top of this, two of the last three head coaches have been first-time defensive coordinators, Todd Bowles and Robert Saleh.

Entering another rebuild with the current culture filled with losing, the Jets can't afford to take a risk on a first-time hire and hope it works. The Jets find themselves in one of their darkest moments as a franchise coming off another failed first-time regime, and Woody Johnson must look for proven football people to make football decisions.

Some names with experience that New York could look into hiring as head coach include Mike Vrabel, Jon Gruden, Brian Flores, Kliff Kingsbury, and maybe a reunion with Rex Ryan. Other coaches, such as Kevin Stefanski and even Kyle Shanahan, could be potential hires if they are let go by their current teams.

One of the known names the Jets could look at for their GM vacancy is John Dorsey, who spent seven seasons as a GM split between the Chiefs and Browns. Dorsey also helped the Lions get off the ground when he joined the front office in 2021.

It has been proven that first-time general managers and head coaches don't survive under this ownership and in the New York market. The last two coaching cycles have also shown former head coaches finding success with new teams. Sean Payton, Jim Harbaugh, and Dan Quinn all currently find themselves in the playoffs through eleven weeks.

While it may seem bleak for the Jets at the moment, there are quality options available to pursue that can get this organization back on track. The biggest question and concern that remains is whether Woody Johnson can make the right decision or hire someone to make the right decision for the organization.
