If there's one thing NY Jets fans have been taught over the years it's to always expect the unexpected. That notion was proven to be true when the Jets shockingly fired head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday.
It's not necessarily that Saleh hadn't done enough to justify his departure so much as the timing of the firing that caught many off guard. The Jets sat at 2-3 through five weeks and were fighting for the lead in the AFC East this coming Monday night.
They had just lost by six points to arguably the NFL's best team in Week 5. No one expected Saleh to be fired so soon into the season, but that's the Jets for you. Expect the unexpected.
With that idiom in mind, who would be the most unpredictable coaching hire the Jets can make this offseason? A candidate who is just crazy enough — but also realistic enough — to make no sense but absolutely perfect sense at the same time.
We're talking about Bill Belichick. The Jets' longtime rival and bitter enemy could actually be a head coach target for the organization in 2025. At least, that's what many want to see happen.
Would the NY Jets actually consider hiring Bill Belichick?
Belichick's history with the Jets organization needs no introduction. The longtime New England Patriots head coach spent decades tormenting his division rival after spurning the organization right around the turn of the century.
He made a career out of torturing the Jets, seemingly taking pleasure in their demise. Belichick was the driving force behind a 15-game winning streak the Patriots amassed over the Jets between 2016 and 2023.
He's been a part of many of the most embarrassing and humiliating moments in Jets history over the last two decades. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more hated individual by Jets fans. But as the old adage goes, there's a fine line between love and hate.
Maybe Belichick is exactly what this Jets team needs. Imagine the story if Belichick were to return to the NFL and return to the Jets, leading his longtime bitter rival to the promised land for the first time since Super Bowl III.
The narrative writes itself.
Belichick is reportedly expected to pursue coaching opportunities after sitting out of football this season. There's a very real chance he'll be an NFL head coach somewhere in 2025. Could that team be the Jets? Would Woody Johnson really hire his most infamous foe?
That remains to be seen, but expect the Belichick-Jets rumors to heat up as we draw closer to the offseason. There's a non-zero chance this actually happens.
