The direction of the NY Jets' organization in 2025 hinges on the decision the team makes with Aaron Rodgers this offseason. It's a choice that both the team and Rodgers himself must make.
ESPN's Adam Schefter spoke about the Rodgers decision during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday. Schefter insisted that Rodgers remains the Jets' best option to compete in 2025 but that the two sides will need to sit down and have an in-depth conversation before any decision is made.
Schefter acknowledged that the decision is more complex than simply asking, "Can he still play?" Rodgers must first determine if he wants to continue his career next season — and if he wants to do so with the Jets.
"Those are questions, I think that both sides have to answer, with input from one another, as they sit down and talk about this issue moving forward."Adam Schefter
The Jets will consider every factor in their decision on Rodgers, including his contract, the new offensive scheme, and alternative quarterback options. While a 2025 return remains possible, the decision is far from straightforward.
Other NY Jets news:
Todd Downing has a new job
The Jets offense improved quite a bit once the team stripped play-calling duties away from former offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and handed the role to passing game coordinator Todd Downing.
Downing quietly did some nice things with the Jets' offense in 2024, but with the team bringing in a new offensive staff led by offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, it was always unlikely they'd look to bring him back.
The former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator wasn't out of work for long, though. Downing has been hired to be the New England Patriots' new wide receivers coach, reuniting him with Mike Vrabel.
Downing has held various roles, from offensive coordinator to tight ends and quarterbacks coach, but he has never specifically coached wide receivers. His familiarity with Vrabel should help with the transition.
Mekhi Becton credits Jeff Stoutland
Mekhi Becton has been a revelation for the Philadelphia Eagles this season, revitalizing his career with a successful switch to offensive guard. He bet on himself with a one-year, prove-it deal, and that gamble seems to have paid off.
Becton spoke to reporters during a pre-Super Bowl media session on Monday and gave high praise to Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland for the strides he's taken this season.
"[Jeff Stoutland's] helped me a lot because support goes a long way. If you support somebody and give them love, they can do whatever they want."Mekhi Becton
Stoutland is widely regarded as one of the NFL's best offensive line coaches and was reportedly a key factor in Becton's decision to sign with the Eagles. Becton has allowed just five sacks and 33 pressures this season as compared to the 12 sacks and 50 pressures he surrendered with the Jets in 2024.
The former Louisville standout has benefitted from a stellar offensive line group around him and one of the best coaches in the league. On Sunday, he will complete his redemption arc as the starting right guard for the Super Bowl-bound Eagles.
