The NY Jets will reportedly make a decision on the future of quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the very near future, with reports suggesting it could come as soon as this week. While nothing is finalized yet, all signs point to the Jets moving on.
FOX Sports insider Jordan Schultz reported on Sunday that "the overwhelming belief is that the Jets are unlikely to move forward with Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback in 2025."
Schultz insisted that "further discussions are expected" between Rodgers and the new regime of Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey, but as of right now, the widespread belief is that the four-time MVP has played his final game as a member of the Jets.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported earlier on Sunday that the Jets are expected to meet with Rodgers soon and that a decision could come this week. Glenn and Mougey are said to "have great respect" for Rodgers, but that doesn't mean he will be kept around.
Aaron Rodgers has likely played his final game for the NY Jets
The Rodgers decision will be the Jets' most crucial move this offseason and the first major test for the new regime. Glenn and Mougey have to decide whether it's worth running it back for one more year or if it's time to move on.
It's a complicated discussion. The financial ramifications of keeping Rodgers in 2025 are not pretty, even if he decides to take a major pay cut. There's also the added factor of Rodgers' health, increasing age, and influence over the organization.
The Jets would need Rodgers to take a sizable pay cut and commit to the entire offseason program to learn new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand's scheme. It's unclear if the 41-year-old quarterback would be willing to do that.
Rodgers has yet to commit to playing in 2025, and some believe he may have already played his last NFL game. Even if he wants to return, the Jets appear to be leaning toward moving on.
Rodgers' relationship with owner Woody Johnson is also said to be strained. The future Hall of Fame quarterback has publicly thrown shade at his owner over the last couple of months, and it's likely those comments didn't go over well.
The Jets will still meet with Rodgers — possibly this week — to discuss his future and their 2025 plans. As history has shown, nothing with Rodgers is ever final until it’s final. But as of right now, all indications are that the Jets will be looking for a new quarterback this offseason.
