As the NY Jets enter an offseason of expected roster changes, the team's offensive line is in the best shape it's been in years. For the first time in quite a few offseasons, the Jets will head into March without the need to completely overhaul their offensive line.
Four of the Jets' five starters are under contract in 2025, including left tackle Olu Fashanu, left guard John Simpson, center Joe Tippmann, and right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. All four figure to be important cogs in a Jets offensive line that exceeded expectations last season.
The only question mark in the starting unit is at right tackle. Incumbent starter Morgan Moses is set to hit free agency, and even if the Jets decide to bring him back, he's hardly a long-term solution.
Many have expected the Jets to re-sign Moses on a short-term, team-friendly contract to provide some stability at the position, but it sounds like that won't be the case. The Jets are not expected to bring Moses back.
NY Jets are not expected to re-sign Morgan Moses this offseason
SNY's Connor Hughes reported on Monday that Moses "isn’t expected to return" to the Jets in 2025. Hughes did not elaborate further on the situation, but the indication is that the Jets will be looking for a new right tackle in the near future.
The Jets acquired Moses in a trade with the Ravens last March, sending a fourth and a sixth-round pick to Baltimore in exchange for a fourth-round pick and a new starting right tackle.
It marked Moses' second stint with the Jets after appearing in all 17 games for the team in 2021. Moses battled through injuries again in 2024 but still managed to play in 14 games. And when he was out there, Moses was still very effective.
The 11-year veteran allowed just two sacks and 16 total pressures in 14 starts, earning a 69.2 Pro Football Focus pass-block grade which ranked 33rd among all qualified offensive tackles (min. 450 pass-block snaps).
Even at 33 years old (he turns 34 next month), Moses remains a quality starting right tackle who's an asset for any NFL roster. His on-field leadership and vaunted toughness make him an ideal veteran presence to have in a young Jets locker room.
Of course, there are two sides to consider. At this stage in his career, Moses might prefer signing with a contender where he can compete for his first Super Bowl ring. However, the Jets aren't expected to be serious contenders in 2025.
It would be nice for the Jets to bring back Moses as a stopgap to maintain offensive line continuity while possibly developing a rookie behind him, but that seems unlikely at this time.
There's always time for plans to change, but as of now, the Jets are expected to have a new starting right tackle in 2025. The good news is that it's much easier to replace one starting offensive lineman than three or four.
