NFL Draft analyst predicts Jets ignore Ty Simpson for surprising Day 2 pick

Upon further reflection, this actually makes plenty of sense.

Nothing is ever easy when it comes to predicting the New York Jets and quarterbacks.

From noted media analysts to fans doing mock drafts, we have collectively spent weeks expecting the Jets to take Alabama’s Ty Simpson, either via trade up or at No. 33.

That’s assuming, of course, that Simpson is available at No. 33.

In his final mock draft, though, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler doesn’t have the Jets drafting Simpson at No. 16 or No. 33.

In fact, Brugler has the Jets bypassing Simpson entirely and picking Clemson defensive back Avieon Terrell at No. 33.

Could the Jets pick Avieon Terrell instead of Ty Simpson?

Before we go any further, let’s answer the two questions you likely have.

Brugler has the Jets drafting Ohio State edge rusher Arvell Reese at No. 2, USC receiver Makai Lemon at No. 16, and Terrell at No. 33.

As for Simpson, Brugler projected the Cardinals will select him at No. 34.

If you’re unfamiliar with Brugler, he’s a full-time, respected draft analyst. This is not an instance of someone throwing darts at a wall based on other mocks.

In other words, pay close attention when Brugler shares a mock draft.

The Jets foregoing taking Simpson at No. 33 and instead taking a defensive back is certainly intriguing. Such a move also makes complete sense.

There is no reason for the Jets to force taking a quarterback that early. Don’t let ESPN’s nonstop Simpson love sway you into thinking he’s a guaranteed future superstar.

That’s not to say that Simpson won’t pan out in the NFL, nor are we predicting that Terrell will become a perennial All-Pro.

At this point, the Jets need skill players who are going to accelerate the rebuild.

What could the Jets do at quarterback if they don’t take Ty Simpson?

Simpson almost certainly wouldn’t play much early after Aaron Glenn committed to Geno Smith as his starting quarterback.

Brugler still believes the Jets will take a quarterback, as he mocked Penn State’s Drew Allar to the Jets in the fourth round.

Even if you’re skeptical of Allar’s NFL talent, adding a Day 3 quarterback to develop behind Smith might be the safer play.

The Jets haven’t had a winning season since Terrell was 10 years old. Their last playoff victory came when the 21-year-old was likely in preschool.

A project quarterback isn’t going to end either streak anytime soon.

However, taking three immensely talented skill players gives them a far better chance of at least inching closer to that long-awaited nine-win mark.
