The NY Jets have yet to make an official decision on the future of Aaron Rodgers, but all signs at this time point to the two sides parting ways this offseason. The team appears ready to move on from the Rodgers era, signaling a fresh start with new leadership at quarterback, head coach, and general manager.
Perhaps that plan can still change, however, especially following news that the Dallas Cowboys have split with now-former head coach Mike McCarthy.
During an appearance on ESPN's Don, Hahn & Rosenberg on Tuesday, Jets insider Rich Cimini revealed that McCarthy "would be interested" in speaking to the Jets about their head coach opening.
Cimini insisted that McCarthy would be "intrigued" by the idea of reuniting with Rodgers on the Jets. Unfortunately for McCarthy, that reunion pipedream doesn't seem likely to happen.
NY Jets not interested in an Aaron Rodgers-Mike McCarthy reunion
McCarthy's interest in the Jets job doesn't appear to be mutual. Cimini reported that he does not believe the Jets would have the same level of interest, confirming a report from The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt, who also said he does not expect the Jets to pursue the former Packers coach.
McCarthy has served as the head coach of the Cowboys for the last five seasons, amassing a 49-35 regular-season record and a 1-3 postseason record. Dallas won 12 or more games in three of McCarthy's five years with the organization.
Other NFL teams are expected to show interest in the former Super Bowl champion, most notably the New Orleans Saints, who are said to be very interested in bringing him in. The Jets might not be interested in McCarthy, but his firing could still affect their coaching search.
With the Jets reportedly battling the Saints for the services of Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, a McCarthy-New Orleans pairing could open the door for the Jets to hire their preferred candidate.
But for those hoping the Jets pursue McCarthy, they're probably out of luck. The Jets are ready to turn the page on the Rodgers era, likely parting ways with a number of his so-called "buddies" in the process.
They're not looking to bring in more Rodgers connections in an attempt to run it back one more year in 2025. By all accounts, Woody Johnson and the Jets are prepared to move forward with a new regime and a new quarterback next season.
It's possible McCarthy could still reunite with Rodgers on a different team in 2025. If McCarthy goes to the Saints, perhaps Rodgers could be brought in as Derek Carr's replacement, provided he signs an extremely team-friendly contract for cap purposes.
Either way, don't expect Rodgers or McCarthy to be members of the Jets organization next season. The reunion tour isn't happening, at least not in Florham Park.
