The New York Jets have the potential to royally screw up their head coaching search. Despite having spent nearly a decade away from an NFL sideline, former Jets head coach Rex Ryan has come up as a legitimate candidate for the job.
Due to nostalgia-blinded fans pining for the good old days and Ryan himself publicly discussing how much he wants his old spot back, a good number of people have talked themselves into Ryan coming back for a second go-around in charge of Gang Green despite all the clear and obvious pitfalls.
The Jets don't seem so far gone, however, that they would make this breathtakingly bad move. The latest buzz all seems to suggest that Ryan is not going to be viewed as a legitimate candidate. The Jets will likely move on to bigger and better things fairly soon.
According to Connor Hughes in an interview with WFAN, Ryan coming back to the Jets for a second term. The nightmare many Jets fans worried about may not come to fruition in a pivotal 2025 season.
Connor Hughes says Jets will not hire Rex Ryan as next head coach
Ryan went 46-50 as Jets head coach. The first two seasons ended in back-to-back AFC Championship game appearances, but the latter four were the first in a long line of Jets seasons that ended in failure. Ryan didn't have a winning season, and he followed up those four years with two seasons as Buffalo Bills head coach that were as mediocre (15-16) as possible.
Ryan has spent the last few years as a talking head on TV, where his big mouth has gotten him in trouble with teams likethe Texans. Ryan has interviewed with the Cowboys and Broncos for their defensive coordinator roles in the last few years, but he didn't land either job.
The Jets have been heavily linked to two younger defensive minds in Lions DC Aaron Glenn and Vikings DC Brian Flores. The latter has been gaining steam, especially if he is paired with Minnesota QB coach Josh McCown as his offensive coordinator and former Colts executive Ryan Grigson as his GM.
Ryan would bring energy and quotes to a locker room, but the game seems to have passed him by. The Jets need to find the next Rex in their head coaching search, rather than going back to their ex-girlfriend in an attempt to recapture the past.
