The latest Garrett Wilson trend is getting out of hand for Jets fans

At some point, you’ve probably heard the old saying about assumptions and why making them is a bad idea.

Evidently, the national media hasn’t realized that with Garrett Wilson, the New York Jets, and the NFL overall.

There’s been an odd offseason trend of outlets predicting which star players will demand a trade within the coming months.

After previously landing on a CBS Sports list tackling that question, Wilson appeared in a similar story by Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport.

Although Davenport noted that Wilson signed a four-year, $130 million extension last year, he believes the team’s continued losing will eventually force the veteran receiver’s hand.

“It would not be a huge surprise if Wilson decides he is not interested in waiting to see whether they can finally identify a long-term answer at quarterback in 2027, given the franchise's uneven history at the position,” Davenport wrote.

The trend of suggesting that Garrett Wilson will request a trade must stop

I understand that the NFL offseason is a time for experimental content and creative trade ideas.

However, there’s a limit as to how far speculation can go before it starts becoming frustrating. 

The issue isn’t so much whether Wilson would ask for a trade. Instead, it’s the perception of trying to manufacture drama solely because the Jets are the Jets.

At no point has Wilson even hinted he’s open to a trade, nor have the Jets signaled they’d be willing to part ways with their star receiver.

Asking whether the Jets should consider moving Wilson is one thing, and that’s a fair question.

If the Jets do not believe they can realistically contend for a playoff spot in 2027, then the subject of a possible trade carries far more validity. 

But the difference lies in how the topic is framed: We’d be asking if Wilson would be traded rather than wondering if he’d request a trade?

This might sound like semantics, but context and facts must matter.

At least for now, Wilson is sticking it out despite last year’s Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams trades. He’s one of the Jets’ longest-tenured players, though last year’s injury and the team’s mediocrity have allowed him to fall through the cracks.

So no, Jets fans, you shouldn’t worry about Wilson going to Darren Mougey this summer and demanding a trade. 

There is no reason to believe that such a drastic action is on the horizon. And as for next spring, who knows? Finally recording a winning season would likely go a long way in keeping the team’s top players around.
