Jordan Love's struggles against Aaron Glenn bode well for beat-up Jets defense

The New York Jets may be fresh off a 1-0 start to the 2026 season after walloping Robert Saleh's Tennessee Titans, but Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers will present a much meatier challenge for Aaron Glenn in his team's home opener. However, history may be on Glenn's side.

The biggest advantage the Packers have over the Jets on the field is under center, as Jordan Love is one of the more underappreciated quarterbacks in all of football. However, when looking back at how Love performed against Glenn's Detroit Lions defense, he hasn't been as dominant as he normally is.

Per Will Parkinson, Love is just 1-3 in his career against defenses where Glenn is the play-caller, including losses in both of his 2024 games. Love has thrown just five touchdowns in four games against Glenn while getting picked three times, and those numbers often came against Lions secondaries that were short on talent. Will history repeat itself?

The Packers will serve as a litmus test for Glenn's defense. While they utterly dominated the Titans in Week 1, Cam Ward was struggling in such a noteworthy fashion that even if Glenn were not locked in as a play-caller, Tennessee would have had difficulty moving the ball. The Jets are also going into this game short-handed.

Standout safety Minkah Fitzpatrick will miss this game as he recovers from a multi-week groin injury, which could force backups like Andre Cisco and Malachi Moore into more prominent roles. Even as rookie D'Angelo Ponds works his way back to full health, he may need to make his NFL debut at an unfamiliar nickel position.

Green Bay's balanced wide receiver room should be frightening for New York. However, a normally efficient Love hasn't always been capable of spraying the ball over the field as effectively when going against an aggressive Glenn defense that loves to heat up the quarterback.

Love is coming off a loss against the Minnesota Vikings, in which Brian Flores blitzed on over 80 percent of the Packers' dropbacks. That was the most in the NFL, with second and third place on the podium being Washington (former Flores understudy Daronte Jones is their DC) and Glenn's Jets.

Glenn may cook up a similar game plan in Week 2, as many of the problems that brought down the Titans are also plaguing the Packers right now. With star running back Josh Jacobs on the commissioner's exempt list and embroiled in some nasty legal trouble, MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks may not be as effective a replacement tandem on the ground.

Aside from Zach Bako-Bewele, the Packers' offensive line could stand to improve, and their struggles were highlighted against Minnesota. The Jets pinned their ears back when they smelled blood against Tennessee, and Glenn will likely try to heat Love up if a similar game script presents itself.

While Love hasn't been at his best against Glenn, Smith has looked sharp against Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon in the past, winning all four of his starts against Gannon's Arizona Cardinals and posting a 112.7 passer rating. If these trends hold true in Week 2, the Jets' chances of an upset will be more realistic.
