The New York Jets have been a part of their fair share of embarrassing reports over the years, but earlier this week, the team's latest coaching rumor managed to stand near the very top of that list.

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported Tuesday night that the Jets apparently reached out to former NFL head coach Jon Gruden about a spot on Aaron Glenn's coaching staff. Gruden reportedly rejected the idea.

However, just two days later, Gruden denied the report, calling it "stupid," while insisting that "there was never anything from the Jets." He also indicated that much of the speculation surrounding a possible return to coaching has been inaccurate.

Rosenblatt addressed Gruden’s comments during an appearance on WFAN later that day, standing by his reporting and saying he would not have published the story if he had any doubts about its accuracy.

He explained that Gruden may have interpreted the report as the Jets offering him a job, when it instead stated that a phone call took place and that the team reached out to inquire. Rosenblatt ultimately maintained that the Jets did make contact with Gruden and did not walk back his original report.

Did the Jets actually reach out to Jon Gruden?

It certainly seems plausible that the Jets would inquire about Gruden's availability. The Jets have been in the market for a veteran offensive assistant this offseason, as Glenn looks to find his "head coach of the offense."

Gruden could theoretically fit that bill as a longtime NFL head coach who had some degree of success as a play-caller in his last stint with the Las Vegas Raiders. Of course, that doesn't mean he'd be a good candidate for the role.

Gruden’s tenure with the Raiders ended in embarrassing fashion, defined by controversial remarks and a disastrous draft record. There is a reason no NFL team has been lining up to bring him back as of 2026.

Instead, the Jets have seemingly pivoted to former NFL head coach Frank Reich as the perceived favorite for their vacant offensive coordinator position. Reich fits the archetype of coach the Jets are looking for and is a bit more reputable at this stage than the disgraced Gruden.

Whether the Jets ultimately reached out to Gruden or not, the end result is the same. The Jets will not be adding the former Super Bowl champion to Glenn's coaching staff, and they're likely better off for it.
