The New York Jets are projected to have an improved cornerback room in 2026, but it is still far from elite. Could Joey Porter Jr. be of assistance?
Brandon Stephens is an uninspiring CB1, D'Angelo Ponds has been hurt all summer, and Azareye'h Thomas hasn't shown much as a pro. Porter could be a major improvement, and Jordan Schultz is reporting that Porter is being eyed by teams around the league who think Pittsburgh is unwilling to give him a long-term contract,
This is, in all likelihood, a ploy by his agents to get more money out of the Steelers. However, would it really be the worst idea in the world for Darren Mougey to at least ask about him? He would be the best cornerback on the roster from the second he touches down, and he'd be the best non-Sauce Gardner corner the team has had since DJ Reed.
New York Jets should consider Joey Porter Jr. trade
The 6-2 Penn State product only has three interceptions in three pro seasons, but he's paired that with 31 pass deflections. Teams going against Pittsburgh have seen fit to throw at basically anyone else except Porter, giving him the same shutdown quality that made Gardner such a weapon in New York
Porter is going to want more than $30 million per season, which is quite an ask. However, the Jets had no qualms about paying a better player in Gardner the same sort of contract one year ago, and they have very few hefty long-term contracts weighing down the books. If any team can pay him, it's the Jets.
New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn would love Joey Porter Jr.
Porter would not only be the Jets' best cornerback immediately, but he'd also be the best cornerback Glenn has had going back to his time with the Detroit Lions. Isn't a former defensive back who was as good as Glenn tired of working with so many reclamation projects?
The Jets got solid play (for what he's worth) out of Stephens last year, but he is simply not a No. 1 cornerback in the NFL. With Ponds likely suited to some sort of slot role in the long-term, all signs point to the Jets either drafting a cornerback in the 2027 NFL Draft or adding a player like Porter to bypass that.
The Jets are still in talent-acquisition mode, and Porter would be one of their bigger swings on talent in the Mougey era. Cornerback has always been a sore spot since trading Gardner, and Porter would give them some long-term stability.
With his contract about to expire, Porter is someone who could be acquired without a very hefty price.
