Jets trade idea ships out 2 first-round picks to solve long-term QB problem

The New York Jets have exhausted just about every option in their hunt to find a quarterback who can lead them to extended success.

They've made trades for veterans, drafted prospects incredibly high, and signed free agents to be their long-term plan at quarterback, and nothing has seemed to work. Geno Smith is just the latest bite at the apple.

Even if Smith does have a good season in 2026, he won't be the starter forever, and the Jets could use a younger quarterback to count on for years to come.

What if the Jets were to swing a trade for another quarterback, maybe one that's been rumored to be on the outs with his current team?

Whacky Jets trade idea lands Eagles QB Jalen Hurts

In a deal proposed by FanSided's Lou Scataglia, the Jets would send both of their 2026 first-round picks to the Philadelphia Eagles for their quarterback, Jalen Hurts.

"This one would be a bit crazy, but that's the point! Jalen Hurts, first and foremost, while a winner, is a very limited quarterback. That statement should not be controversial at all. Where Hurts thrives is with a strong run game, elite offensive line, and an offense that doesn't ask him to do a lot with his right arm."
Lou Scataglia

Scataglia acknowledges that this trade idea is a bit hair-brained, but it's still an interesting thought exercise nonetheless.

Hurts has been much maligned by Eagles fans, especially after this past season. Philadelphia's offense struggled mightily at times, and a lot of it could have contributed to their quarterback's up-and-down season.

They likely wouldn't be opposed to flipping him and his massive contract for two first-round picks, but is that something the Jets should seriously consider?

Absolutely not. The Jets are not in a position to flip two premier draft picks for a quarterback as limited as Hurts. Would he make them better? Probably. Good enough to be considered a playoff contender? No.

New York needs to use those draft picks on two players who will help them win now. They have a serviceable quarterback who can help them compete in Smith; now they just need playmakers on offense and defense.

Trading for Hurts would be a blockbuster move, but it wouldn't help the Jets and their long-term goal of turning the team around, and they're betting on hanging onto those draft picks to improve other areas of the roster.
