Jets' trade acquisition Jordan Meredith signs revised contract

New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey has built himself quite the reputation as a savvy trader over his first two years as the lead decision maker for the Jets, and his most recent deal continues to age better as the days go by.

On Sunday, Mougey sent the Las Vegas Raiders a 2027 sixth-round pick for veteran offensive lineman Jordan Meredith and a 2029 seventh-round pick. It was a much-needed addition for the Jets, who were lacking depth behind the likes of Josh Myers, Joe Tippmann, and Dylan Parham.

The Raiders had initially re-signed Meredith to a one-year, $3.52 million contract back in March, and he was set to play on that for New York this coming season. But Over the Cap's Jason Fitzgerald revealed that the Jets were able to get the veteran to rework his deal.

Instead of his $3.52 million price tag, Meredith is now playing on what is essentially a one-year, $2 million deal. It has $1.9 million guaranteed plus incentives.

It remains unclear why exactly the Jets felt the need to rework Meredith's contract. It's not like they're hurting for cap space; they remain near the top of the league in available spending money, with roughly $25 million, per Over the Cap.

The Jets took care of their key extension candidates this summer, signing running back Breece Hall and guard Joe Tippmann to lucrative new deals, but there are some other players who are up for new deals.

Defensive tackles Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs are impending free agents, along with edge Kingsley Enagbare and safety Dane Belton. Phillips seems like an easy extension candidate thanks to his leadership, and any of the other aforementioned players could prove their worth enough during 2026 to warrant an extension.

We'll see what Mougey ends up doing as the season progresses.

Are the New York Jets in trouble if Jordan Meredith ends up playing?

There's no question the Jets needed to make a trade for interior offensive line depth. Before dealing for Meredith, Xavier Newman was the first man up in case of injury, and that may have ended in disaster.

Meredith may not be a starting-caliber center, as evident from his play last year for the Raiders, but as depth? He fits that role just fine. It also doesn't hurt that he has the ability to play both center and guard.

The veteran may not have as much impact as some of Mougey's other trade acquisitions like Phillips, Briggs, or even Jarvis Brownlee Jr. If all goes to plan, Meredith shouldn't even see the field in 2026.
