Jets suggested to take quarterback amid projected historic 2027 NFL Draft

Back in 2021, the New York Jets and Zach Wilson were part of a draft that began with three consecutive quarterbacks going off the board.

Sports Illustrated’s Justin Melo has the 2027 draft going a step further, with quarterbacks making up the first four picks. Naturally, that includes the Jets, who haven’t taken a quarterback in the first round since the Wilson disaster.

However, Melo doesn’t have the Jets drafting Arch Manning, who is widely expected to go No. 1 to Arizona. Instead, he proposed that the Jets take Notre Dame’s CJ Carr at No. 4 after missing out on Oregon’s Dante Moore (Dolphins) and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin (Browns). There has never been an instance of four quarterbacks going within the NFL Draft's first four picks. 

“Carr needs to play within structure more frequently and limit the chaotic plays, with more reps hopefully leading to a calmer demeanor,” Melo wrote.

Nothing says limiting chaotic events like playing for the New York Jets.

What New York Jets fans must know about Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr

CJ Carr was born in 2005, which itself hurts to write. Consider that in 2005, Herm Edwards still coached the Jets. Curtis Martin was in his final season, and notable starting quarterbacks league-wide included Trent Dilfer, Kyle Boller, and Gus Frerotte. We are getting way too old for this.

A four-star prospect from Michigan, Carr recorded a 66.6% completion percentage, 2,741 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions for the Fighting Irish. He’s not going to beat teams with his legs, though he rushed for three touchdowns as a redshirt freshman.

Unfortunately for Jets fans, Notre Dame quarterbacks don't have a recent history of NFL success. Brady Quinn famously flamed out with the Browns, and Jimmy Clausen only played 21 games in six seasons. Riley Leonard flashed as a rookie with the Colts and is currently competing with Anthony Richardson Sr. for the backup job. 

And the less said about DeShone Kizer, the better off we all are. Rarely can the term “bust” be fairly used for a second-round quarterback, but Kizer certainly fits the bill. We’re a long way removed from Joe Montana and Joe Theismann.

Should the last few decades of Notre Dame quarterbacks scare the Jets into forgoing drafting Carr? Not necessarily. Alabama has had plenty of offensive linemen fail in the NFL, and the recent failures of Evan Neal and Alex Leatherwood didn't stop the Dolphins from picking Kadyn Proctor.

As buzz continues to mount about the 2027 NFL Draft’s quarterbacks, Jets fans should keep in mind that the team has three first-round picks. They have the draft capital to theoretically land a franchise quarterback via trade. Alternatively, Baker Mayfield’s contract situation has only furthered the questions about him potentially leaving the Buccaneers.

Cade Klubnik will also be entering his sophomore season, and we know how much the fanbase would love to see him succeed. Perhaps we’ll watch the Cade Klubnik Hype Train battle it out with the CJ Carr Fan Club next summer.
