The New York Jets picked up another win on Sunday afternoon in a rain-soaked game against the Atlanta Falcons at MetLife Stadium. After an 0-7 start, Aaron Glenn has this Jets team headed in the right direction as they improved to 3-2 over their last five games with Sunday's win.
Sunday's game marked another huge performance for the Jets' special teams as they squeaked out a three-point win on the back of a few big plays from the unit.
A muffed punt recovered by Qwan'tez Sitggers, three punts inside the 20-yard line from Austin McNamara, an 83-yard kick return by Isaiah Williams, and a game-winning 56-yard field goal by Nick Folk were the game-changing plays on Sunday.
For the Jets, this wasn't just one game of dominant special teams play. Chris Banjo has had this unit playing at an elite level all season, and Sunday's performance propelled them into history through twelve games.
The Jets' special teams has been historically great this season
After Sunday's win over the Falcons, the Jets' special teams DVOA jumped from 9.5% to 11.3%. With this increase, the Jets are now tied with the 2007 Bears for the second-best special teams DVOA through twelve games since DVOA began getting tracked in 1978.
The record for the best special teams DVOA in an entire NFL season is 11.8%, held by the 2002 New Orleans Saints. The Jets, at 11.3%, are in striking distance of potentially tying or passing that number with five games to go in the 2025 season.
The Jets also lead the NFL in average kick return yardage, special teams touchdowns, and field goal percentage. Banjo's unit is also allowing the second-lowest opponent punt return average, which has helped the Jets to the fifth-best starting field position after opponent punt returns.
To say Chris Banjo has been a home run hire for Aaron Glenn's staff might be an understatement. Coming off a 2024 season that featured a Jets special teams that made a plethora of mistakes that cost them many games, Banjo has turned this unit around in just one season.
Moving on from punter Thomas Morstead and kicker Greg Zuerlein, and replacing them with Austin McNamara and Nick Folk, has proven to be a massive upgrades at both positions. The Jets also brought in Isaiah Williams and re-signed Kene Nwangwu.
In year two, Qwan'tez Stiggers has taken his game to another level under Banjo, which included an impressive performance in Sunday's win over the Falcons.
A lot of these pieces have been hand-picked and developed by Banjo and this regime, and they have all been key contributors on special teams. The Jets are making history with this unit, and they have an elite coach leading the way in Chris Banjo.
