Jets questionably named best fit for former All-Pro defender to snap horrendous streak

This free agent certainly specializes in interceptions.

You may or may not have heard, but the New York Jets didn't record a single interception in 2025, something never before seen in modern NFL history.

They're doing everything they can to change that in 2026, including adding multiple defensive backs with a nose for the football.

Minkah Fitzpatrick is the Jets' new star at safety, who has 21 career interceptions over eight seasons in the NFL. They signed Nahshon Wright in free agency, who had five picks last season for the Chicago Bears. We'll see if these additions make a difference for New York in the turnover department.

If the Jets coaching staff gets to training camp and decides they need more playmakers in their secondary, there's a veteran free agent out there who could be the guy New York needs to force more interceptions.

Jets listed as best fit for former Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs

NFL.com's Matt Okada listed the Jets as an ideal fit for free agent cornerback Trevon Diggs, despite his lack of production and injury concerns over recent years.

"Diggs is the perfect low-cost, low-risk, high-reward signing for a team like the Jets. If he can’t rediscover his early upside, then no harm, no foul...But if the 27-year-old harnesses his Pro Bowl form once again, Gang Green could get an excellent bargain and end up with a sneaky-strong secondary next season and beyond, despite trading Sauce Gardner away last November."

Diggs' value has never been lower throughout his six-year NFL career. He's dealt with some major injuries over the last two seasons and has only appeared in 18 of 34 possible games. It got so bad in Dallas that they released him to get out from under his five-year, $97 million contract.

But what can't be denied is his latent ability to force turnovers. In his first four years in the league, the former Alabama standout was an All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, and recorded 18 interceptions, and intercepted 11 passes in 2021.

But that was five years ago now, and Diggs hasn't been the same player for a while now. There's a reason why the former Cowboys and short-lived Green Bay Packer remains unsigned.

Despite being named as a fit for the Jets, the addition doesn't make sense at this point in the offseason. New York already did a great job of overhauling their cornerback room with the aforementioned Wright and 2026 second-round pick D'Angelo Ponds.

With Brandon Stephens and 2025 third-round pick Azareye'h Thomas as in-house options, the Jets can better allocate their resources elsewhere on the roster.
