The New York Jets appear to have reached the final stages of their search for a new offensive coordinator. All indications are that this process could be wrapping up as early as today if all goes according to plan.
The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported Tuesday morning that former NFL head coach Frank Reich "is in Florham Park today," presumably for an in-person interview with the Jets. Rosenblatt added that he "would expect the Jets OC search to wrap up pretty soon."
This comes less than 24 hours after the Jets officially completed in-person interviews with the other two known finalists for the job, veteran NFL assistants Greg Roman and Darrell Bevell.
The expectation remains that Reich is the odds-on favorite, but the situation appears to be trending toward the Jets hiring more than one of their finalists to join Aaron Glenn’s staff, and possibly all three.
The Jets might hire Frank Reich as offensive coordinator today
The Jets made the controversial decision to part ways with offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand last week following an abrupt change in offseason plans for the coaching staff.
Glenn decided late in the process that he wanted to call defensive plays, pairing himself with a young defensive coordinator. That shifted the organization away from Wink Martindale as a DC candidate and prompted the Jets to search for a "head coach of the offense" to run that side of the ball.
Glenn and the Jets didn't feel that Engstrand was right for that position, and after discussions about a reduced role on the staff, the two sides agreed to mutually part ways. Reich quickly emerged as the favorite to replace the young offensive assistant.
But in recent days, it's become clear that the Jets would prefer a scenario where Reich is joined by at least one of Roman and Bevell, if not both. The Jets could be looking to hire all three to Glenn's staff.
The process to get to this point has been a rollercoaster, to say the least, but an end result of Reich as offensive coordinator (and perhaps assistant head coach), Roman as running game coordinator and senior assistant, and Bevell as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach feels like an acceptable outcome for the franchise.
It remains to be seen what the final version of the offensive staff will look like, and additional changes are almost certainly on the way. That said, the offensive coordinator search appears to be nearing its end, with an announcement expected in the near future. Stay tuned.
