Jets may need to make this trade to secure biggest need in 2026 NFL Draft

The New York Jets are in a unique spot entering the 2026 NFL Draft. They are one of five teams that hold two first-round picks, and have the flexibility to move around the board thanks to their two selections in the second round as well.

New York's No. 2 overall pick seems destined to be a defensive player. One of Ohio State's Arvell Reese or Texas Tech's David Bailey is the obvious choice. But things get interesting at No. 16.

The Jets are likely keeping their fingers crossed that one of the top wide receivers falls to the pick they got in the Sauce Gardner trade with the Indianapolis Colts. But there's no guarantee that one of Ohio State's Carnell Tate, Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson, or USC's Makai Lemon makes it there.

Wide receiver is arguably the Jets' biggest need based on their current roster, and if they want to ensure they get one of those top pass-catching prospects, they may have to get aggressive to do so.

Jets given trade blueprint to move up for a top wide receiver

ESPN's Bill Barnwell proposed a deal between the Jets and Cincinnati Bengals, allowing New York to move up to the 10th overall pick to get a receiver of their choosing.

The Jets would give up the lesser of their two second-round picks to facilitate the deal, addressing the biggest hole on their roster.

"Moving up for a wide receiver such as Lemon or Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson -- or even top tight end prospect Kenyon Sadiq out of Oregon -- could make sense for Mougey, who has plenty of draft capital. The Bengals aren't looking for a receiver, but it stands to reason that the Dolphins and Rams would be, which could leave the Jets without their preferred target at No. 16."

The key to the trade here, as Barnwell notes, is that the Jets would be jumping ahead of the Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Rams, two teams that have noted interest in adding a new pass catcher to their ranks.

Miami just shipped Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos and has a desperate need to add talent around new quarterback Malik Willis. Los Angeles, on the other hand, reportedly tried to move Davante Adams earlier in the offseason and is looking for a younger face to add to their ranks.

If the Jets don't want to risk missing out on one of those top prospects, they may have no choice but to make this deal.
