The New York Jets might claim they are all done adding big names to their roster after a very active start to the Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey era, but they may need to rethink that claim after one big name hit the open market.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings may have ignited a hot trade market for his services, demanding either a move away from the only team he has ever known or a new contract. Could the Jets be willing to get a bit aggressive here?
Why not try to add someone who could instantly be the No. 2 wide receiver on this team, has his best years of football in the windshield ahead of him, and won't cost an arm and a leg for a team that recently agreed to a new contract with star No. 1 target Garrett Wilson?
Jets could trade for 49ers WR Jauan Jennings after trade request
Jennings tallied just under 1,000 yards and six touchdowns with the 49ers last season, which was an outlier when compared to the rest of his career. Prior to that, Jennings still had plenty of positivity within that 49ers fanbase, even earning the nickname "3rd and Jauan" for his playmaking in the clutch.
Jennings fits in with the ethos Glenn is trying to instill. He is one of the best blocking wide receivers in the league, is versatile enough to line up in several different alignments, and his shown to be capable of pulling in tough catches over the middle. He's instantly the WR2 in New York.
As he showed last season, Jennings is a solid WR2 in this league who was often held back by a San Francisco team that has multiple qualified pass-catchers. Jennings would easily beat out Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard, though adding him could spell doom for players like Malachi Corley at the back end of the roster.
Jennings is a high-upside gamble that could end up burning the Jets if he reverts to his old form, but the ceiling of what he could be in the right offense is enticing enough to get the Jets interested in him.
